To all the amateur and confirmed musicians out there: fret not, for the countless hours spent spreading demos around you are not pointless. There might just be someone on the receiving end. This is the success story of one Tobias Jesso Jr, a young Canadian musician whose lopsided piano demos were noticed by JR White, of the defunct Girls. Tobias had sent out these fragile and terribly poignant bits of songs, and two days after the Girls break up, JR White listened to them and immediately asked the young man if they could work together. Though Jesso remained stranded in Vancouver due to visa problems, he was soon able to join his new mentor and they started working on Tobias Tesso Jr’s first album. Somewhere between John Lennon and Cass McCombs, tears will no doubt be shed.
